This sculpture represents a handcuffed Christ in wood from the XVIIth century. This work is an heir of the Flemish art in direct link with the one practiced in France at that time, and that can be put in connection with the artists of Saint-Germain-des-Pres in Paris (artists often from Flanders, naturalized French by the king). The simplicity and power emanating from this work reflect the tragedy experienced by the protagonist at this point in his history.
Passion Episode, Christ of Pity
After he had answering Jesus, Pilate washed his hands, released Barabbas and bowing to the popular judgment delivered Jesus to the soldiers of the garnison that they would officiate as the Roman law. The Gospel explain the episode like this: 'He (Pilate) delivered Jesus, after he has been flagellated, to be crucified' [Mattew (27 – 26) Marc (15,15) et John (19,1)]. Then Jesus is attached to a column where they flog with whips provided with pieces of bones and lead points. After flogging Jesus remains attached to the column and await the hour of his execution. This iconography was really employed during the XIVth century to the XVIIth century popular in the Christian 'radical' middle as Protestants or Jansenists in order to vehicle a contrition message in opposition with the opulence of the Pope court.
